What we believe in, is what we live in
The sun neither rises nor sets, it is the earth which rotates but still we start our days calling the dawn, a sunrise and end the day with what we call a sunset. The way we believe things is because of the way we get to see them. The way in which we live our life depends on the facts we believe in.
In the times when the fact about the
earth not being the centre of the universe was not known, people believed the
earth as the centre, formed theories and untrue facts and strived to solve
mysteries with their aid; only to die and never know that they were headed
towards the wrong way. Now in the modern age we boast of having more and truer
knowledge than the people of historic times but it may so be the reality that
we too are believing in the wrong facts and are headed the wrong way. The
complexity is that we don’t know how true the truth is.
Modern world is the world of
information. Lots of information are bombarded on us through various media like
newspapers, magazines, journals, internet, teachers, parents, friends, and
almost anything with which we come in contact, be it a thing or a person, feels
like a piece of advertisement. And our life is governed by the information
which we choose to believe and not to believe. The fact is we do not know if
what we are reading or hearing or saying is true or false and the significant
reality is that knowing the truth doesn’t even matter. What matters is what we choose to believe. For instance, almost all
of us have many instances in our life which if we look back and rewind, we
question ourselves that how could we have been so stupid, ignorant and naïve to
overlook all the facts telling us not to have taken that damn decision. The
reason for such oversight is that once we form an opinion we love the reasons
that confirm the opinion & neglect the ones that oppose it. In psychology,
this is termed as confirmation bias.
If
we come to talk of confirmation biases, history is an interesting and
vulnerable subject - quite interesting confusion. We don’t know if what has
been written had actually happened or if what had happened had actually been
recorded. And we have no way of knowing the fact if something happens and none
of it is recorded. We can just guess and then work to prove our guess correct.
This is what makes the quote by the great Albert Einstein quite significant
“reality is an illusion –albeit a persisting one”.
This habit of setting beliefs,
affects our personal life greatly. We often do not try to recognize what we
don’t see. The love those who cannot show it, the respect of those who don’t
show it. Children don’t observe the care of their parents, students don’t see
the love of their teachers, old ones don’t see the love their younger ones and,
we neglect many times the positive side of a coin. This is because somewhere
somehow in the newspapers or a movie or from a person we may have heard that
parents don’t treat their children well, students don’t respect their teachers,
teachers don’t teach well, etc, and we break relationships by believing
baseless doubts and ideas. Instead, we shall try to see the reality. We shall
not go along with the masks of adulant and sycophant people. We should love,
care and respect those who do that to us truly.
Honestly, even I cannot fully contemplate how much
amount of Truth Lies (pun intended) in what I have written. It’s just one of my beliefs that
we go by our beliefs. Like, I believe in God, you may or may not. For me, He
will create my life, as for you will create your life. And we may die in the
same soil without knowing the truths of the life.
It is
very correctly explained in the Bible that, ‘It is done unto you as you believe’.
The quote says,
“If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him who shall believeth.” MARK 9:23
